Here’s a collection of adventures our staff has loved and wholeheartedly recommends. Each offers a distinctive experience that you’re sure to thoroughly enjoy. These trips range in scope, but all share the same exceptional attention to detail and customer service you’ve come to expect from Idaho River Journeys. IRJ does not receive commissions for these recommendations (except for our own Middle Fork Salmon trips), we’ve personally experienced these adventures as guests and look forward to enjoying them again.
Pacuare River Rafting – Costa Rica
For those seeking an international rafting adventure, especially in Costa Rica, a trip with Pacuare Outdoor Center (POC) is highly recommended. Located in the town of Turrialba, about three hours from San José, POC offers an exceptional 3- to 4-day rainforest lodge rafting experience. This journey takes you through lush rainforests, navigating class III and IV rapids, with breathtaking waterfalls and dramatic canyon walls. The lodge embodies glamping at its finest, perched high above the river with private cabins featuring comfortable beds, private showers, and bathrooms. On non-rafting days, guests can enjoy a ropes course, hike to stunning waterfalls with inviting swimming holes, or simply relax on the deck while soaking in the serene beauty of the rainforest.
Raft the “New” Klamath or Rogue River – Oregon
Visit a river that is being reborn after years of being dammed. In 2024, the removal of dams from the Klamath River opened up miles of remarkable whitewater, offering a unique chance to witness its transformation. Indigo Creek Outfitters now offers one day and two trips down the Klamath River to celebrate and explore these newly accessible sections of the river. For those looking for a longer adventure in Southern Oregon, we recommend the Rogue River. Known as one of America’s premier multi-day river trips, the Rogue River offers an ideal family getaway with its mix of thrilling rapids and stunning scenery.
Horse Pack Riding in the Sawtooth – Idaho
Immerse yourself in the rugged beauty of the Sawtooth Mountain Range on horseback. Mystic Saddle Ranch offers wilderness pack trips that take you deep into the backcountry, allowing you to explore without the burden of carrying gear and food. Beyond guided pack trips, Mystic Saddle Ranch provides gear drop-off services, giving you the freedom to hike without the extra load. Whether you’re seeking a fully guided adventure or just support for your independent trek, Mystic Saddle Ranch offers flexible options. Contact Mystic Saddle Ranch for more information and to plan your unforgettable mountain journey.
Blue Moon Yurt – McCall, Idaho
The Blue Moon Yurt is a unique culinary adventure that begins with an active journey—you’ll need to cross-country ski, snowshoe, hike, or bike in to reach it. Once there, you’ll be treated to a gourmet meal served in the cozy charm of a rustic yurt. This experience combines outdoor adventure with unforgettable flavors.
Ski Lost Trail, Soak, and Stay at Jackson Hot Springs – Idaho/Montana
Lost Trail Powder Moutain is a small mountain ski resort nestled on the Idaho-Montana border, 94 miles south of Missoula and 51 miles north of Salmon. While Lost Trail may be modest in size, it more than makes up for it with abundant powder and a vibrant community. On powder days, which are frequent, you’ll find minimal crowds and a variety of fun, engaging runs. After a day on the slopes, the lodge becomes a welcoming spot filled with skiers gathered around the fireplace. For travelers, finding nearby lodging can be challenging, which is why we recommend Jackson Hot Springs, located about an hour away from Lost Trail.
Sundog Expeditions – Alaska
Experience a multi-day Alaskan river trip with Sundog Expeditions. Surrounded by towering mountains, stunning glaciers, and incredible wildlife, rafting in Alaska is an adventure you will never forget. Sundog offers trips through the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Gates of the Arctic National Park, and Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve.
September Fly Fishing Middle Fork Salmon – Idaho
The Middle Fork Salmon is renowned for its fly fishing, but it truly shines as a fishery in September. Cooler temperatures make the fish more active, and fewer crowds mean less pressure on the water. We maximize this trip by limiting it to 12 guests across 6 fishing boats, giving everyone the space to spread out and enjoy their own private Idaho. Combine six days of exceptional fly fishing with gourmet meals and comfortable wilderness camping, and this trip becomes a must for any angler.
