There’s a version of the Middle Fork that most people never see — and it might be the best one. In late May, the Middle Fork of the Salmon is a different river. It’s running full, the rapids are bigger, the waterfalls are pouring, and the canyon feels more alive than it will all summer. It’s a side of this trip that very few guests ever get to see — and this Memorial Day weekend, you can.
May 25–29: An Open Invitation

We have an open launch date on May 25th for a five-day Middle Fork expedition. This trip is available for individual bookings or as a charter for groups of 12 or more. Early-season launch dates are our most accessible trips of the year — here’s the details:
- $2,595 per person, five days and four nights in the Frank Church–River of No Return Wilderness.
- All meals prepared by our guides — from fresh camp breakfasts to multi-course riverside dinners.
- Professional guides who have been rafting the Middle Fork of the Salmon for years, and prioritize an active itinerary of exploring, hiking, and hot springs.
- All rafting equipment, safety gear, and camping equipment — including gear to keep you warm on the river: wetsuits, paddle jackets, and paddle pants.
- Shuttle transportation to and from the river.
Why Early Season on the Middle Fork Is Something Special

The Canyon Is Transformed: Late May in the Middle Fork Canyon is a different landscape than what you’d see in July. Wildflowers are blooming across the hillsides. Waterfalls are running at full force. The air is cooler, the light is dramatic, and the whole canyon has an energy — a sense of renewal and raw power — that’s hard to describe until you’re rafting or hiking through it.
Big Water, Fun Rapids: The Middle Fork drops nearly 3,000 feet over its 100-mile course through the largest wilderness area in the contiguous United States. At high water, that gradient translates into continuous, fun whitewater — over 100 rapids.
The Solitude Factor: Early-season trips see fewer people on the river. You’ll still soak in natural hot springs, hike to ancient rock art, and explore pioneer homesteads along the river corridor — but you’ll likely have these places more to yourself than you would in peak season.
