Main Salmon Rafting Vacations

Salmon River rafting vacations are river trips that everyone, from grandparents to grand kids, will enjoy and return with memories that last a lifetime. The river is ideal for families with youngsters. The water is warmer than most western rivers, many campsites are on big sandy beaches, there are hiking trails nearby, and famous rapids that will keep everyone smiling.

We are often asked to compare the Main Salmon to its big tributary, the Middle Fork of the Salmon. They are both wonderful rivers with distinct attributes. Because the Main Salmon is warmer with inviting swimming holes, spacious camps and rapids that are fun but not intimidating, we recommend the Main Salmon for families with young children (under 8) and the Middle Fork for older family groups.

A canyon rich in history, a famous wilderness river, and family time are the elements that dominate this trip. The town of Salmon, the route to our put-in, the river itself, and the surrounding country all offer close-ups of the history of western territorial exploration and settlement. Native American sites, Lewis & Clark, pioneer settlements, gold rush exploration, thwarted attempts at development, and the congressional heroics that preserved this rugged wilderness will form the background of our entire trip. The river carries us through rugged country with formidable stretches of exciting, fun whitewater. The landscape is spectacular but it will be the time spent with friends, the rapids you run, the big sandy beaches, the nearby hikes, the exquisite campsites, and the immensity of the place that will create the lifetime memories that you will bring home from Idaho's "River of No Return", the wild Main Salmon.

The Salmon River is the longest free-flowing river (425 miles) within one state in the continental U.S. It traverses the immense Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness and has been designated a Wild & Scenic River by congress. The wild section, the remote road-less and historic stretch from Corn Creek to Carey Creek, is where we run our trips.

If you are planning a family reunion, celebrating a milestone event, or just looking to take a trip with a group of friends or business associates, consider booking a private trip on the Main Salmon. Charter trips can be arranged for parties of 8 or more. Planning Your Trip has essential information about our Main Salmon vacations, including travel and lodging suggestions, what to bring and other helpful details. Our Just for Moms page has answers to many of the questions we receive about family rafting.
