Fly-fishing on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River is outstanding all summer but best when temperatures have cooled in late-August and September. On all our trips, fishing boats for 2 plus a guide can be reserved for $2,495 per-person.
Fly Fishing on Idaho’s Middle Fork
The Middle Fork of the Salmon is a celebrated "blue ribbon" trout stream that is home to a hearty population of Westslope cutthroat trout. Fishing conditions on the Middle Fork are ideal once high water conditions in mid-June have subsided. Fishing gets better as the season goes on with August and September being the prime angling months. If you don't own your own gear and want to try your hand at fly fishing, let us know and we will outfit you with everything but a license and teach you the basics. You will be catching (and releasing) trout after a few practice lessons. One caveat, we only provide fly rods for adults.
Late August and September Fly-Fishing Trips
Our August 25, September 2 and 9 trips are specifically structured for fly fishing. On these departures our maximum group size is 12 and only 2 fisherman go in each boat. Parties of 8 or more can charter a date. We fish the main river as well as some of the Middle Fork side creeks. Guests joining us on these 5-day trips can meet us in Boise or Salmon the evening before departure. The fare is $2,495 per person and includes a flight to the river the morning we launch.
More Fly Fishing Information
Local fly fishing shops have a wealth of information about fishing on the Middle Fork. McCoy's in Stanley is an excellent shop and can help with licenses, flies and other gear. In Boise, we recommend the Idaho Angler which is located on Vista Avenue, a few minutes from the airport. Typically we use dry flies including these patterns: Stimulator, Royal Coachmen, Parachute Adams, Sofa Pillow, and Irresistables. Idaho's Middle Fork Salmon is a classic fly-fishing river. Clear, clean water is ideal habitat for native Cutthroat Trout and they are found here in abundance. Our guides can help you polish your skills or teach you the basics. On request, we provide complete fly-fishing outfits for guest use. All you need is an Idaho fishing license.
